Trilogy of Borobudur – Mendut – Pawon Temple

borobudur-northwest-viewBorobudur, the single largest Buddhist monument in the world, was built by the mighty Syailendra kings, and is still used for Buddhist ceremonies that draw people from all around the world.  Climb the stairs to the top, and watch the green, peaceful countryside all around you.

Even today, Indonesians of various religious backgrounds still try to touch one of the Buddha statues inside the numerous stupas, an act believed to bring good luck.

Near Borobudur, there’s also a far smaller, rather mysterius temple of Pawon, and the middle-sized Mendut, the full glory of which hasn’t been returned since excavations haven’t been able to find all parts of the candi.

Next to Mendut are a giant tree that’s probably hundreds of years old, shading the yard, and a serene Buddhist monastery that used to be a Christian monastery.
